Understanding Security & Social Media

Do you know what security risks your worker faces overseas?

As surveillance technology becomes accessible to governments and organizations, workers need to be diligent about their communication and social media strategy.

You can help by knowing how (and how not) to interact with your worker. Understanding and minimizing the security risks in your communication helps ensure their safety and longevity on the field. (If your worker hasn’t already shared guidelines about email and social media, write and ask them what precautions you should take.)

As a starting point, be aware that most workers will not publicize the name of their host country, the people they are reaching, or the specific details of their ministry. This policy applies to social media, email communication, phone conversations, and newsletters. Follow your worker’s lead and use the code names he or she uses. When in doubt, err on the side of caution.

However, don’t let security concerns prevent you from communicating with workers. They need your encouragement and your involvement in their lives and ministries. At a minimum, share how God is at work in your life and offer verses of encouragement.
