Involving Your Children

I once received a ministry donation of $1.35.

It came with a carefully handwritten note: “Please use this to help share Jesus with Muslims. Love, Joy.”

I knew that this gift, sent by a friend’s young daughter, was more than a portion of Joy’s weekly allowance. It came covered with daily prayer.

Her parents told me how Joy faithfully prayed every night for my ministry and for those I was reaching with the Gospel. But the impact went beyond blessing my ministry through tithing and prayer. Joy was growing as a globally minded Jesus follower who is committed to God’s plan for the nations.

Involving your children in God’s global mission is remarkably simple.

Here are some easy ideas to start engaging your children with your worker’s ministry:

  • Put up a map with your worker’s country highlighted, and use it as a visual reminder to pray with your children for the ministry, the nation, and its people.
  • Discover interesting facts about the country and culture with your children.
  • Visit an international grocery store with your children and discover foods from your worker’s region.
  • Encourage your children to draw pictures or write a letter to your worker.
  • Teach your children to tithe. When your worker writes about a special need or project, ask your children to consider giving towards it.
  • Read through your worker’s newsletter with your children, then pray together for the ministry.
  • Give your children the opportunity to ask a question about field life when your worker comes for a visit.
  • Ask your worker to teach you and your children a phrase in the local language.
