I’ll never forget the day my wife got the letter. It was accompanied by a check for $500 written to my wife. And only my wife.

The letter contained specific instructions: buy new clothes.

To some, this directive could seem offensive, as if the supporter were subtly saying, “You look shabby, sweetie.”

But this supporter understood the heavy burden carried by people who raise support. As field workers, we know that supporters sacrifice much in order to give to the work God has called us to. In a very real way, the money given is God’s money. And we feel guilty about spending it on our personal needs and interests.

The subtle expectation is that field workers should be poor. Buying decent clothing could make it look like we are well off—instead of living off donations.

Consequently, field workers often need encouragement to spend a little money on themselves.

If you want to bless a missionary, force them to take care of themselves and even splurge a little. Write a check with specific instructions to use it on clothes, enjoying a hobby, or something nice for the home. Don’t worry, they won’t be offended. They’ll be surprised and blessed beyond words.
